How Spain's electricity mix has changed over the last decade

Spain's 2024 electricity mix looks very different from 2014. Solar has multiplied its share and coal has nearly vanished.

This piece shows which technologies have gained and lost ground over a decade of accelerated transition.

The biggest gain was Solar fotovoltaica, up +13.87 pp between 2014 and 2024.

The biggest drop was Carbón, which lost 15.29 pp over the same period.

Evolution by technology (2014-2024)

The series show the structural shift: coal has collapsed, solar has surged and wind has remained the leading renewable source.

What the data tells us

1 Solar photovoltaic has been the decade's biggest winner, rising from 3.12% to 16.99%.

2 Coal fell from 16.44% to 1.15%, nearly disappearing from the electricity mix.

3 Changes in generation do not eliminate external dependency, which remains high due to fossil fuels in other sectors.
